Subject: No Title
Judge: Katrina Davenport LRPS DPAGB
What does a competition theme of “No Title” mean?
A competition entitled “No Title” simply means that when members enter their photographs, they should not provide a title or caption with the image.
- In most competitions, a title can guide or influence how a judge interprets the photograph. For example, a picture called “Lonely Road” immediately suggests a mood, story or meaning.
- With “No Title”, the idea is to remove that extra layer of guidance so that the image must stand entirely on its own merits. The judge will respond purely to what they see in terms of composition, creativity, impact, technical quality, and emotional strength - without being nudged by words.
- This often results in a more level playing field, as all entries are viewed without any verbal “clues”. It challenges photographers to produce work that communicates strongly without explanation.
In short, “No Title” means the picture must speak for itself.
A few ideas of what NOT to enter:
- Subtle documentary where context matters
- Historical images where location adds meaning
- Abstract work that needs explanation
- Images where narrative depends on who/where
